But the biggest news of the weekend in the sports world came out of the NHL…
as Alexander Ovechkin broke Wayne Gretzky’s all-time scoring record yesterday – scoring his 895th career goal against the Islanders. Congratulations to Alex…I mean…that was one record that I think everyone thought was going to hold up until the end of time. And it got me thinking about what the NFL equivalent would be…I was talking about this with Hamilton yesterday…and I really think it all starts and ends with Jerry Rice.
No one is even close to Jerry in any of the 3 major categories – catches, yards, and touchdowns. And to put it in perspective, we added the closest active player to his records in there on the right.

Travis Kelce is the closest to him in catches, and is STILL over 500 away.

DeAndre Hopkins is the active leader in receiving yards now that Julio Jones announced is retirement. He’s 10,000 yards away from Jerry.

And Mike Evans is the active leader in touchdown receptions…and he just passed the halfway mark to Jerry. Mike is averaging 9-and-a-half touchdowns per year…he’d have to keep up that pace for another 10 seasons – until he’s 42 – to catch him.

I do think there is one player who could give one of these records a run though based on what he’s done so far…and that is Justin Jefferson.

Jefferson is currently averaging an NFL Record 96.5 yards per game…blowing away the competition there…he’s also on a 100 catches per season pace, which is also an NFL record. And no shade to Jerry – but it’s wild to think he’s doing all of this without a Joe Montana or Steve Young throwing him the ball too. It of course would take at least another decade for him to get there…and some good injury luck…but if anyone in this league right now can pull an Ovechkin I think it is Jettas.
