Big news in the world of football and Chicago real estate — the Chicago Bears are officially reviving their plans to move out of Soldier Field and into Arlington Heights, Illinois, according to a new Chicago Tribune report. After months of uncertainty, the franchise is back on track to develop a state-of-the-art stadium complex on the site of the former Arlington International Racecourse.

The Bears have long been caught between two homes — their iconic but outdated Soldier Field in downtown Chicago and the vacant racetrack in Arlington Heights, which the team purchased in early 2023 for $197.2 million. The purchase, made just before Kevin Warren took over as team President and CEO, includes 326 acres of prime suburban real estate.

Since the land acquisition, there’s been tension and back-and-forth with the city of Chicago. Talks for a renovation or rebuild at Soldier Field have stalled repeatedly. As the Tribune reports, “the franchise is once again planning to build a stadium complex in Arlington Heights after a project at the current downtown site of Soldier Field hasn’t been able to get off the ground.”

In late April 2025, Warren sent a letter to the Chicago Park District outlining his concerns and frustrations — but received little response. In contrast, the team has made steady progress with suburban officials.

“Over the last few months, we have made significant progress with the leaders in Arlington Heights, and look forward to continuing to work with state and local leaders on making a transformative economic development project for the region a reality.”

Notably, the team won’t seek direct state funding for the stadium build, but would require “megaproject” legislation to move forward. This law would help them negotiate tax incentives with local governments.

With the city slow to act and suburban support growing, it’s becoming clear: the future of the Bears is no longer in downtown Chicago.
