The Chicago Bears are continuing to add depth and upside to their defensive front, signing undrafted free agent (UDFA) Xavier Carlton out of Cal just before the start of 2025 Training Camp. A physically gifted edge rusher with intriguing versatility, Carlton could be a hidden gem in the Bears’ rotation if developed properly.
📍 Who is Xavier Carlton?
Hometown: Layton, Utah
Height: 6'6"
Weight: 270 lbs
Age: 23
Colleges: Utah (2020–2021), Cal (2022–2024)
Originally recruited to the University of Utah, Carlton transferred to California (Cal) in 2022 in search of more consistent playing time and a featured role on defense. That bet paid off, as he developed into one of Cal’s most reliable defensive linemen.
📊 College Stats (Cal Golden Bears)
Games Played (2022–2024): 34
Total Tackles: 111
Tackles for Loss: 21
Sacks: 9
Passes Defended: 6
Forced Fumbles: 2
Carlton brings a unique blend of length, power, and discipline as a run defender. He’s not the kind of edge rusher who wins with pure speed, but his size and football IQ make him an ideal candidate for hybrid fronts and rotational duties in the NFL.
🧠 NFL Scouting Report (via The Draft Network)
“Xavier Carlton is a highly intriguing ball of clay at the edge spot who, with the correct development, could enjoy a large rise on draft boards due to his physical profile and ability on early downs. Aligned primarily outside the shoulder of the offensive tackle (5-tech), Carlton flashes the frame and skill set that could see him earn more snaps within the interior of the defensive line in hybrid fronts.
As a run defender, Carlton showcases excellent usage of his length, stacking and shedding with consistency. He’s not an upfield penetrator who attempts to disrupt ball-carriers in the backfield. Rather, Carlton approaches the run game with technique and patience to seal the edge. Once he understands the ball-carrier is not looking to press the edge or bounce to the perimeter, Carlton will disengage from blocks and pursue the football.
As a pass rusher, Carlton has a ways to go to become a threat to earn consistent snaps at the next level. However, the tools and traits are there that remain intriguing towards his ceiling as a prospect. Will align up and down the line of scrimmage, with success from a variety of alignments.”
🐻 How He Fits in Chicago
With the Bears continuing to mold their identity under head coach Matt Eberflus, Carlton has a chance to earn reps as a rotational 5-tech or interior lineman. His strength against the run and frame (6'6", 270 lbs) make him a natural fit for early downs, and with refinement, he could carve out a long-term role in a versatile front seven.
Don’t sleep on Carlton. He may not have heard his name called in the 2025 NFL Draft, but the tape—and the tools—say he belongs in the league.
