In the letter, Warren stated the Bears have “experienced a litany of adverse issues with the physical condition of Soldier Field and its operations, which are due to the lack of routine maintenance and capital improvements.” He also pointed out that the Bears and the Chicago Park District are “supposed to be holding monthly meetings to discuss Soldier Field maintenance and capital improvement plans.”
Chicago Alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa responded on April 24, saying he was “surprised” by the tone of Warren’s letter, especially “given the ‘longstanding partnership’ between the Park District and the Bears,” and emphasized the team’s “regular involvement in stadium decisions” as the primary tenant of Soldier Field.
Meanwhile, Chicago politics watchers noted a shift in tone from Mayor Brandon Johnson, who had previously remained hopeful about keeping the team in the city. As reported by Spielman & Armentrout, “the adversarial tone of Warren’s letter was surprising given the buddy-buddy relationship he had seemingly established” with the mayor. Johnson, who has been “saying for months that he hasn’t given up hope for keeping the Bears in Chicago,” appeared “less optimistic” during a recent press conference.
Is this the beginning of the end for the Bears at Soldier Field?
