The Chicago Bears are entering a new era in 2025—and Head Coach Ben Johnson isn’t wasting time shaking things up. From veterans to rookies, no one is safe from the demanding, detailed style he brings to Halas Hall.

During OTAs at the Walter Payton Center, tight end Cole Kmet was put under the microscope in front of his teammates, coaches, media, and even VIP guests. As reported by Adam Jahns:

“Chicago Bears tight end Cole Kmet felt the wrath of new head coach Ben Johnson in front of his teammates, coaches, media members and even some special guests watching from the balcony of the Walter Payton Center during organized team activities.”

But Kmet embraced the challenge and praised Johnson’s approach:

“That’s just an example of Ben not letting up on those things and making sure everybody’s on the details. I mean, he’s not just yelling at you because he doesn’t like you. He wants things right, and he wants to win, and he knows that’s what you have to do.”

“And I think guys have been really receptive to that so far. I think that’s something that may be a little unique from what I’ve had in the past. Not saying other coaches weren’t detailed, but it’s like an obsession with the details… He just can’t let it go.”

“It’s an obsession with the details and he can’t let it go. It’s everyday, and it’s relentless. He’s definitely thrown a lot at us in this short time here, but I think he wants to challenge us as a group. I think we’ve done a pretty good job so far. There’s definitely been some ups & downs, but that’s the method behind the madness.”

Wide receiver DJ Moore also chimed in, reflecting on how Ben Johnson’s coaching forces players to self-evaluate deeply:

“I don’t think it gets on your nerves. It’s more like, dang, you got to look deep down in yourself be like...’Did I really mess up? Did I execute the play at the highest level that I can? Was I slacking or was it perfect?'”

When it comes to body language and accountability on film, Johnson doesn’t leave room for interpretation:

“Just don’t do it. Just keep it inside. Talk about it later. Just don’t put it on film. Don’t put it on TV.”

Ben Johnson addressed the reason behind his intense approach:

“I think that the great ones, they want to be coached hard. That's really the assumption we're making with all of these guys. They all, at one point in time, they've either come up to my office or DA's office, or (special teams coordinator) Richard Hightower's office and they've all told us how much they want to be a good player, a good team. They want to be a part of greatness. We're going to treat them as such, and part of that is coaching them hard.”

Reflecting on his past experience in Miami, Johnson also said:

“I had that narrative in Miami when we drafted Tannehill in 2012, that he struggled with the deep ball, and you just keep focusing on it–you get close with your receivers. It doesn’t matter if you’re throwing the ball deep, throwing it short, but it takes some time to develop chemistry.”

Another big storyline this offseason is at left tackle, where rookie Ozzy Trapilo is already looking like a steal.

As Clay Harbor put it:

“It’s incredible seeing how quickly he’s learned this offense...He’s looking like a veteran already.”

“Ozzy was back with the one’s today and had a very nice practice. Pads aren’t on obviously but guy looks uncommon for a rookie.”

With pressure mounting and expectations high, one thing is clear: Ben Johnson's Bears are built different. The foundation is accountability, obsession with details, and coaching every player like a future Hall of Famer. Can this new energy fuel a turnaround in Chicago?
