“Dobbins, who is three years younger than Chubb, would make more sense.”
With Cleveland Browns RB Nick Chubb also still available, the Bears have two intriguing choices as they look to add depth and explosiveness to their backfield for the 2025 NFL season.
🔍 J.K. Dobbins: Why He Makes Sense for the Bears
College: Ohio State University
NFL Draft: 2020, 2nd round (55th overall) by the Baltimore Ravens
Size: 5'10", 212 lbs
Stats:
2020: 805 rushing yards, 9 TDs (6.0 YPC) as a rookie
Career: 1,347 rushing yards, 12 rushing TDs (5.9 YPC in 23 games)
Struggled with injuries, including an ACL tear in 2021
Impact: Explosive runner, elite vision, dynamic zone scheme fit, especially if paired with a dual-threat QB like Caleb Williams.
🆕 Dobbins recently signed a free agent tender with the Chargers, meaning:
“Under the terms of the tender, the Chargers will have exclusive negotiating rights with Dobbins if he has not signed with a team at the start of training camp. He would stand to make $3.428 million if he played out the year under the tender.”
Despite being tendered, Dobbins could still be a realistic target for Chicago if they are willing to negotiate a trade or wait it out.
🐃 Nick Chubb: The Proven Workhorse Still on the Market
College: University of Georgia
NFL Draft: 2018, 2nd round (35th overall) by the Cleveland Browns
Size: 5'11", 227 lbs
Stats:
Career: 6,511 rushing yards, 48 rushing TDs (5.3 YPC)
4× Pro Bowl selection
Suffered a major knee injury in 2023, but progressing in rehab
Why He’s an Option: Elite downhill runner, excellent in outside zone schemes, mentor potential for younger backs, and a locker room leader.
While Dobbins brings youth and explosiveness, Chubb offers elite production and experience. If Dobbins isn’t the guy, Chubb could still be a reliable Plan B as the Bears try to reshape their offense around rookie QB Caleb Williams.
🏈 What Would Dobbins Bring to the Bears?
If healthy, Dobbins offers:
Quick-cut explosiveness and open-field burst
Scheme versatility (zone and gap)
High YPC efficiency
Pass-catching upside that fits well in a modern offense
Whether it’s Dobbins or Chubb, the Bears are clearly not done building their 2025 offense.
