Football (Fall 2024):
The 2024 football season, the first under new head coach Mike Elko, saw the Aggies finish with an 8-5 overall record and a 5-3 mark in the SEC.
This record placed them ninth in the SEC preseason poll, but they ultimately finished with a respectable conference record.
They achieved notable wins against ranked opponents like LSU and Missouri.
However, they also suffered significant losses to South Carolina and a decisive loss to rival Texas.
The season concluded with a loss to USC in the Las Vegas Bowl.
While not a disastrous season, falling short of SEC Championship contention and losing to Texas leaves room for improvement in the eyes of many Aggie fans.
Men's Basketball (Winter 2024-2025):
The men's basketball team, led by Buzz Williams, finished the season with a 23-11 overall record and an 11-7 record in SEC play, finishing fifth in the conference.
They were ranked #19 in the final AP poll, indicating a strong season.
The Aggies received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament as a #4 seed, suggesting high expectations.
They defeated Yale in the first round but lost to Michigan in the second round, falling short of a Sweet Sixteen appearance.
While making the NCAA Tournament is a success, the second-round exit might be viewed as underachieving for a team with their ranking and seeding.
Other Sports (Fall 2024 & Spring 2025):
Volleyball finished the fall with a 21-8 record and was ranked #16 nationally, suggesting a successful season.
Soccer had a less successful fall, finishing 8-9-2.
As of April 9, 2025, several spring sports were ranked highly, including Men's Outdoor Track and Field (#1), Women's Tennis (#2), and Softball (#3), indicating potential for national success in these areas.
Conclusion:
Based on the performance of the high-profile programs, "devastating" might be too strong a word for the 2024-2025 Texas A&M athletic year. The football team showed improvement under a new coach but didn't reach the program's ultimate goals. Men's basketball had a strong regular season and made the NCAA Tournament but had an earlier exit than hoped. Several other sports demonstrated significant success and national rankings.
Whether the year is considered "devastating" likely depends on individual expectations and the specific sports one focuses on. While there might be disappointment in some areas, there were also clear successes across various Aggie athletic programs. A more accurate description might be a year of mixed results with some promising signs for the future in certain sports.
